Conditioner Recipe #2

This is the latest iteration of my conditioner recipe. I’m cutting it back to 300g from 400g total. It’s currently cooling its heels in the refrigerator. At ~450g to the pound, I should have enough to make about 50 batches of conditioner that I used to pay $30 a bottle to get. It’s insane. Yes, it is a bit pricey to gather all the ingredients but once you have them, you have enough to make a LOT of batches of conditioner.

The early slip test that I did on this batch seems even better than the last batch. Swapping out the Cetaryl Alcohol for the Cetyl Alcohol seems to have improved the slip. I also noticed that it seemed to need a bit more oil and I found some nice Avocado oil when I was cruising through the grocery store.

A couple of quick notes on the ingredients. Behentrimonium Chloride and its cousin Behentrimonium Mesosulfate are two things my hair loves but they are pretty stinky. Behentrimonium Chloride has that certain “low tide” smell and it’s some work to cover that up in the end product because no woman wants to smell like that. The general consensus in the DIY community is to not use it all – ever – under any circumstances. It’s difficult but keep the percentages low, cut it with the BMTS-50 and use a lot of some fairly strong scents. The oils that you use in your blend seem to also play a part in how noticeable it is in the end product. I find that the BTMS-25 didn’t help it fade into the background sufficiently.
